33. 삼하 24:9 “요압이 백성의 수의 총계를 왕께 고하니 이스라엘 안에 칼을 빼는 용맹한 자 팔십만 명이 있었으며 유다 사람이 오십만 명이었더라.”(And Joab gave up the sum of the number of the people unto the king: and there were in Israel eight hundred thousand valiant men that drew the sword; and the men of Judah were five hundred thousand men.) / 대상 21:5 “요압이 백성의 수의 총계를 다윗에게 주니 곧 이스라엘 중에서 칼을 뺀 자가 백십만 명이요, 유다는 칼을 뺀 자가 사십칠만 명이었더라.”(And Joab gave the sum of the number of the people unto David. And all they of Israel were a thousand thousand and an hundred thousand men that drew sword: and Judah was four hundred threescore and ten thousand men that drew sword.) → 요압이 계수하여 보고한 이스라엘 백성의 수에 차이가 있다.팔십만 명인가, 백십만 명인가? 유다사람은 오십만 명인가, 사십칠만 명인가?

◈ 분명하게 상호 모순이나 오류처럼 보이는 수의 차이가 오히려 성경은 사람이 쓴 것이 아니라 하나님께서 영감으로 기록하게 하셨다는 사실을 반증하는 자료가 될 수 있다. 사람이 썼다면 모순처럼 보이는 것을 그대로 놔두지 않고 고치려고 하였을 것이다.

요압은 다윗 왕의 명령을 받아 이스라엘 모든 백성의 수를 세었다. 그러나 항목별로 계수한 것으로 보인다. 이스라엘에서 칼을 빼는 곧 군사로 싸울 수 있는 사람의 수는 총 110만 명이지만 이 중에서 용맹한 자[용사, valiant men]는 80만 명이었고 나머지는 30만 명은 군사이긴 하지만 여러 가지 사유로 용사가 되기에는 적합하지 않은 군사로 보인다. 역대기상은 칼을 뺀 모든 군사의 수가 110만 명이라는 것이고 사무엘기하는 110만 명 중에서 “용감한 자”로 분류되는 수가 80만 명이라고 밝히고 있다.

30만 명에 대한 또 다른 분석이 있다. 30만 명은 왕을 호위하고 섬기는 관리들이 되는 군사의 수로 보는 것이다. 이스라엘의 우두머리 아버지들, 천인대장들, 백인대장들, 관리들이 한 조당 24,000명씩 12조를 편성하여 매월 교대로 왕을 섬기는 군사가 총 288,000명(cf. 대상 27:1-15), 그리고 그들을 통솔하는 지휘자들, 그리고 여러 수비대 주둔지에 고정 배치된 군사들을 합치면 대략 30만 명이 된다는 분석이다(요한 웨슬리 John Wesley).

이와 같은 분석을 지지하는 다른 성경학자도 있다(데이비드슨, Davidson, “The discrepancy is only apparent, and admits of an easy reconciliation; thus (see 1Ch 27:1-15), there were twelve divisions of generals, who commanded monthly, and whose duty was to keep guard on the royal person, each having a body of troops consisting of twenty-four thousand men, which, together, formed an army of two hundred eighty-eight thousand; and as a separate detachment of twelve thousand was attendant on the twelve princes of the twelve tribes mentioned in the same chapter, so both are equal to three hundred thousand. These were not reckoned in this book, because they were in the actual service of the king as a regular militia. But 1Ch 21:5 joins them to the rest, saying, "all those of Israel were one million, one hundred thousand"; whereas the author of Samuel, who reckons only the eight hundred thousand, does not say, "all those of Israel," but barely "and Israel were," &c.”).

두 번째 문제도 이와 같은 분석 방법으로 접근할 수 있다. 유다지파의 총 수는 50만 명이지만 그 중에서 칼을 빼어 싸울 수 있는 사람의 수는 47만 명이다. 나머지 3만 명은 아마도 몸이 약하거나 장애 등이 있어 칼을 빼어들고 싸울 수 없는 사람으로 보인다.

또 다른 분석이 있는데, 사무엘은 블레셋과의 국경 수비대로 고정 배치된 3만 명(cf. 삼하 6:1)이 포함된 군사수를 기록하였고,역대기상 기록자는 이 수비대 군사를 뺀 수 47만명만 기록한 것이다(데이비드슨, Davidson, “It must also be observed that, exclusive of the troops before mentioned, there was an army of observation on the frontiers of the Philistines' country, composed of thirty thousand men, as appears from 2 Sa 6:1; which, it seems, were included in the number of five hundred thousand of the people of Judah by the author of Samuel. But the author of Chronicles, who mentions only four hundred seventy thousand, gives the number of that tribe exclusive of those thirty thousand men, because they were not all of the tribe of Judah, and therefore he does not say, "all those of Judah," as he had said, "all those of Israel," but only, "and those of Judah." Thus both accounts may be reconciled [DAVIDSON].”).

✿ 이 사건에 어느 분석이 해당되든지 두 성경기록은 상호 불일치가 아니라 상호 보완해주는 정확한 하나님의 말씀이다.
